Soon, I will write a short article in which I look at the issue of free will again. I can see why religions and philosophers (and now scientists) have struggled with this issue. It does not fit neatly into any category of logic, and it may not be an either/or proposition after all. The questions that I will look at are: If part of the human mind is an aspect of scientific determinism, then is all of the mind a product of scientific determinism? Does any part define the whole, and if so, which part? Or can any part mold the other, i.e. can environment alter genes? I guess I'll also have to look at the Theory of Evolution as well as genetics--genotype and phenotype. I'll have to prepare for this, so be patient.
